چکیده

The study of musical timbre by Bailes (2007) raises important questions concerning the relative ease of imaging complex perceptual attributes such as timbre, compared to more unidimensional attributes. I also raise the issue of individual differences in auditory imagery ability, especially for timbre. Submitted 2006 November 21; Accepted 2006 November 25

Timbre as an Elusive Component of Imagery for Music

Evidence of the ability to imagine timbre is either anecdotal, or applies to isolated instrument tones rather than timbre in real music. Experiments were conducted to infer the vividness of timbre in imagery for music. Music students were asked to judge whether the timbre of a sounded target note was the same or different from the original following a heard, imagined, or control musical context...

A Response to Cross & Rohrmeier’s ‘Comments on Facilitation and Coherence Between the Dynamic and Retrospective Perception of Segmentation in Computer-Generated Music’

The commentary by Cross and Rohrmeier (2007) attempts to locate our paper (Bailes and Dean, 2007a) as a study of timbre, and points out the ongoing development of research in this area, including attempts to define psychoacoustic thresholds of perception. However, our work is directed to understanding broader psychological phenomena such as the impact of sound duration on the perception of stru...

Musical Expertise and the Ability to Imagine Loudness

Most perceived parameters of sound (e.g. pitch, duration, timbre) can also be imagined in the absence of sound. These parameters are imagined more veridically by expert musicians than non-experts. Evidence for whether loudness is imagined, however, is conflicting. In music, the question of whether loudness is imagined is particularly relevant due to its role as a principal parameter of performa...

Mental Imagery for Musical Changes in Loudness

Musicians imagine music during mental rehearsal, when reading from a score, and while composing. An important characteristic of music is its temporality. Among the parameters that vary through time is sound intensity, perceived as patterns of loudness. Studies of mental imagery for melodies (i.e., pitch and rhythm) show interference from concurrent musical pitch and verbal tasks, but how we rep...
